Collecting Asia: A Book Exhibition Showcasing East Asian Art (1842-1930)

A Unique Book Design by LYU Wei

Collecting Asia is a book created for the exhibition "Collecting Asia - The West Discovers East Asian Art (1842-1930)" held by Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology. This book aims to present the rush and highest print quality of that era in the best possible way.

The book, designed by LYU Wei, is a remarkable piece that captures the essence of East Asian art collections between 1842 and 1930. Its folding cover, adorned with a rising sun motif, creates an endless visual experience, immersing readers in the mysterious oriental flavor. Each page dedicated to an entry in the collection is uniquely designed, adding to the book's allure.

The realization of this design involved the use of various techniques and materials. The case cover features four colors and matte varnish on 180 gsm matte coated paper, while the text is printed on 105 gsm matte coated paper using four colors. The book is wire-bound, ensuring durability and ease of use.

The design of Collecting Asia presents several challenges, particularly in the binding process due to the folding cover. However, LYU Wei's meticulous approach and dedication to preserving the best performance have overcome these obstacles, resulting in a visually stunning and functional book.

The project commenced in July 2016 in Hangzhou and was completed in November 2016. Collecting Asia has garnered recognition, winning the 2nd Prize in the Fifth Design & Art Contest of Chinese Universities. It is a testament to LYU Wei's exceptional talent and creativity.

This unique book design by LYU Wei showcases the rich culture and history of East Asian art. Its captivating visuals and meticulous craftsmanship make it a valuable addition to any art enthusiast's collection.
